Tourism sector : 14,550 tourists by March 2024

Initiatives to promote Madagascar as a destination

In March, the monthly tourism and handicrafts review validated a notable surge in tourist arrivals compared to the preceding year. Data from the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts (MTA) indicated a significant increase of 2,108 tourist arrivals in March 2024 compared to the corresponding period in 2023.

The first two months of the year showcased a promising start for tourism, a trend that gained further momentum in March. Despite the challenges of the previous year, marked by the global health crisis, March 2024 saw a notable increase in tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2023, with 2,108 more tourists recorded. However, these numbers have yet to reach the levels observed in March 2019, the benchmark year before the onset of the health crisis, which saw 15,967 tourists.

In pursuit of the ambitious goal of attracting one million tourists by 2028, the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts (MTA) is initiating proactive measures to position Madagascar as a premier destination. In March, various events were organized to promote local tourism, such as the « tsenaben’ny fizahantany », alongside the staging of the Nosy Boraha Jazz Festival. Furthermore, on the international stage, the MTA actively participated in the Holiday & SPA trade show in Sofia, Bulgaria, with the strategic objective of expanding Madagascar’s presence in the Eastern European market.
