IORA Region : Promoting women’s empowerment and tourism

Encouraging women to be involved in tourism activities

Deeply committed to the Indian Ocean region, Mauritius is a founding member and host of the IORA Secretariat. This commitment translates into a relentless drive to strengthen the role of IORA and its benefits to member states and beyond.

Given the shared maritime heritage and the aspirations for peace and prosperity that unite the countries of the Indian Ocean, the consolidation of relations is imperative. In addition, the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) promotes and contributes to the empowerment of women in the tourism sector.

Mauritius stands out not only for its strategic location, but also for its commitment to empowering women in the tourism sector. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius boasts a rich mix of cultures and traditions. This island nation actively promotes the participation of women in the tourism industry, recognizing their significant contribution to the sector’s success.

As chair of the IORA Core Group on Tourism and host of a previous IORA event focused on tourism, Mauritius has clearly advanced the cause of women’s economic empowerment in the region.

A recent IORA report highlights the critical role women play in the tourism sector. In this country, women represent approximately 42 % of the tourism workforce. This presence translates into diverse contributions, including roles in the hotel industry, travel agencies, tourism operations, cultural preservation and local handicrafts.
