Ocean Decade : Commitment to Ocean Sciences

Seychelles support educational programs including Ocean Sciences

The Ocean Decade serves as a unifying platform for scientists and stakeholders to advance scientific knowledge and collaborations necessary to accelerate progress in ocean sciences.

« In our gathering today, it’s crucial to acknowledge the remarkable strides achieved under the leadership of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Their efforts have brought together a global network of partners, uniting us in our shared mission to advance the science essential for safeguarding the invaluable blue expanse that connects us all », remarked Seychellois President Wavel Ramkalawan during his opening speech at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference in Spain.

« We’ve established our National Decade Committee, comprising diverse stakeholders, including scientists, local and indigenous knowledge holders, and early-career ocean professionals. Our objective is to empower stakeholders to collaborate, strategize, and implement Decade initiatives », he further emphasized.

Seychelles demonstrates a robust commitment to ocean sciences through governmental initiatives. Notably, Seychelles leads by example, integrating ocean knowledge and sustainable ocean management into school curricula, setting a precedent for others to follow.
