Ratification of the High Seas Treaty

Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan has emphasized that a primary objective for the international community should be to facilitate the swift ratification and implementation of the High Seas Treaty. Concurrently, efforts should be made to encourage its entry into force among at least 60 states.

During the Our Ocean Conference in Athens, Greece, on Tuesday, April 16, President Wavel Ramkalawan, speaking from the State House, highlighted the significance of the BBNJ Treaty, also known as the High Seas Treaty. This international agreement aims to conserve and sustainably manage marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Ramkalawan expressed optimism about the adoption of the BBNJ agreement, emphasizing its potential to promote a healthy ocean, planet, and human life. He underscored the treaty’s balanced approach, which aims to protect marine biodiversity while also facilitating scientific discovery and sustainable development. The president portrayed the agreement as a symbol of global cooperation and a testament to collective efforts toward planetary well-being.

Furthermore, Ramkalawan emphasized the treaty’s role in advancing various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate regulation, food security, nutrition, peace, and justice. He stressed the importance of capacity-building assistance for Seychelles and other developing nations to swiftly implement the treaty’s objectives and elements.

For Seychelles, the objectives and principles outlined in the BBNJ treaty are of paramount importance, reflecting a national priority to ensure the long-term sustainability of the oceans for the benefit of humanity.
