Seychelles : Meeting with suppliers of construction material

Measures to be taken to support suppliers

Hon. Devika Vidot, Minister of Investment, Entrepreneurship and Industry, organized a meeting last week with suppliers of building materials based in Providence, Seychelles.

The purpose of the meeting was to analyze how the aftermath of the December 7, 2023 explosion has affected suppliers in terms of operations, inventory levels and supply forecasts. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss ways in which the government can help professionals resume their activities as easily and quickly as possible. These suppliers play a vital role in the renovation, repair and construction of buildings and homes. Concerns have also been raised about the use of safety glass in buildings.

Knowing that many households will need to replace their doors and windows, the Minister is encouraging suppliers to advise their customers objectively on the use of safety glass. At the same time, the Seychelles Bureau of Standards is continuing its program to raise awareness of glass standards among Seychellois citizens.

Lower prices for some construction materials in Seychelles

The Seychelles Minister is also encouraging professionals to liquidate their stocks at a reduced price. As the number of customers will increase significantly, they will benefit from higher sales volumes. He admires the fact that some suppliers have indicated that they have reduced their selling prices and that most of them do not expect any increase in the price of building materials.

Minister Vidot thanked suppliers on behalf of the government for their understanding in this difficult situation. The Minister stated: « For those who have reduced their prices, we salute and congratulate you for your understanding and solidarity with our brothers and sisters affected. We also urge other suppliers to follow suit. »

As a reminder, this warehouse explosion was felt several miles away. And its blast shattered the windows of nearby homes, banks and stores.
