Better regulation of mining operations in Madagascar
The Minister of Mines, Olivier Herindrainy Rakotomalala, has announced the completion of the draft decree implementing the mining code. One year after the adoption of the new mining code, this marks the culmination of a project that has engaged all stakeholders in the mining sector.
The Minister indicates that he intends to present this draft decree to higher authorities during the week of May 13, 2024. The process of developing the mining code and its implementing decree involved extensive consultations with all relevant parties.
Public consultations addressed various points and queries raised by mining operators. However, the Minister of Mines assures that all inputs provided by stakeholders have been duly considered. Key topics discussed include the issuance of mining permits, the resumption of gold exports, social and environmental considerations, and the collection of royalties and taxes on mining products.
During the final session of public consultations at the Mining Business Center in Ivato, private sector operators contributed positively to the development of the mining code. The implementation of this new legislation is expected to yield significant benefits for public finances.
