Recognition of Mauritian Expertise and Origin
A prestigious certificate that solidifies the reputation of the sugar industry in Mauritius. Indeed, Mauritius has received its Geographical Indication (GI) certification at the national level for its unrefined sugars.
This international certification confirms the geographical origin of a product, as well as its authenticity and quality. It is important to note that awarding this Geographical Indication at the national level is part of an initiative that brings together several stakeholders. These include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), the Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project in Africa (AfrIPI), and other sugar sector actors. The Mauritius Industrial Property Office (IPOM) grants this certification, supported by the European Union.
The acquisition of the Geographical Indication also highlights the remarkable work carried out by Agriterra, a subsidiary of the Terra Group, in the field of unrefined sugars. In addition to recognizing Mauritian expertise and origin, the Geographical Indication contributes to a significant appreciation of these products in the European market. In response to this situation, Nicolas Maigrot, Managing Director of the Terra Group, stated that « the granting of the Geographical Indication allows us to distinguish our products on the world stage while enhancing their value, thus affirming our agricultural heritage and our recognized expertise in sugar refining ».
In addition to unrefined sugars, a procedure to obtain a Geographical Indication for Mauritian rum is also ongoing.
