Fruits and vegetables record the largest drops
According to the Statistics Mauritius report, the PPI-A for the second quarter of 2024 highlighted significant changes in the agricultural sector.
In March 2024, the PPI-A index was at 213.2, but it decreased by 11.6 % to reach 188.5 in June 2024. The breakdown of monthly declines was as follows: -5.5 % in April, -2.6 % in May, and -3.9 % in June. The sugarcane index was 318.8 for the period from July 2023 to June 2024, based on the final sugar price for the 2023-2024 season. This represents an increase of 21.1 % compared to the 2022 season.
For other agricultural products, the index, which was 220.8 in March 2024, decreased by 32.6 % to reach 148.9 in June 2024. The most significant event was a 46.6 % drop in the prices of fresh vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and cabbage. This decline was partially offset by an 11.1 % increase in the prices of fruits and nuts, particularly pineapples.
The « Animals and Animal Products » sub-group of the index saw a slight increase of 0.3 %, rising from 156.5 in March 2024 to 156.9 in June 2024. This increase was due to rising prices of deer (+13.8 %), livestock (+1.0 %), and eggs (+0.1 %). For the second quarter of 2024, the overall index experienced a decrease of 8.1 % compared to the previous quarter, while showing an increase of 11.9 % compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
