Reductions of 10 to 12.5 %
While the price of rice might still increase, the price of sugar and flour seems to be decreasing, much to the surprise and delight of consumers given the current rampant inflation.
Reductions of 10 to 12.5 % have been recorded on the cost of sugar and flour in stores. Two weeks ago, the price of a kilo of flour was 4,000 ariary (0.85 USD) and it has now dropped to 3,500 ariary, representing a 12.5 % decrease. As for the price of sugar, it has decreased to 4,500 ariary per kilo from the previous 5,000 ariary, representing a 10 % reduction. Surprisingly, the cost of these food products has decreased instead of increasing as is usually the case during the festive season.
It is unusual to see a decrease in the price of these two consumer products in the midst of the end-of-year festivities, especially during a period of budget restrictions. It is also noted that this year, the increase in the price of eggs has not been very significant.
Traditionally, during the festive season, eggs are sold between 800 and 1,000 ariary each depending on their size, but currently, their cost ranges between 650 and 800 ariary. The purchasing power of citizens has significantly decreased, preventing them from celebrating as they used to. Notably, the cost of a kilogram of rice has recently exceeded the 4,000 ariary mark, heavily impacting the daily expenses of each household.
