Towards Strengthened Consumer Protection
A workshop began on March 13, 2025, at Le Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Port Louis, bringing together political stakeholders, experts, and representatives from the 22 COMESA member states.
Organized by the Ministry of Trade and Consumer Protection, this three-day event aims to discuss key consumer issues and strengthen cooperation in law enforcement.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Devrani Manorama Mathur Dabidin, and the Director General of the COMESA Competition Commission (CCC), Dr. Williard Mwemba, presided over the opening ceremony. This meeting, which is part of the celebrations for World Consumer Rights Day, aims to promote harmonized policies aimed at strengthening citizen protection in the region.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry and the CCC will be signed to formalize this collaboration, build capacity, and improve law enforcement. The CCC CEO noted that the COMESA Consumer Protection Committee, established in 2019, plays a key role in finding solutions to consumer challenges.
