Challenges in the mining sector
Following a month-long production halt of nickel and cobalt, the Ambatovy mining complex is gradually resuming operations, particularly after addressing a technical issue that affected the mineral transport pipeline between the Moramanga mine and the Toamasina plant.
A mineral leak on September 25 at Ankorabe, in the Ranomafana municipality, caused an abrupt production stoppage, necessitating urgent repair work. The pipeline renovation underwent rigorous testing to ensure structural integrity, with mineral transport expected to restart by October 28.
Herindrainy Olivier Rakotomalala, the Minister of Mines, inspected the progress visually to ensure compliance with standards. He reaffirmed government support for Ambatovy in an official statement, emphasizing that « worker safety and environmental protection remain top priorities ». Despite the global drop in nickel prices, which has impacted the sector and forced many producers to cease operations, Ambatovy remains determined to continue production.
To stay competitive, Ambatovy relies on a phased production recovery, adjusting operational intensity and enhancing safety measures to prevent further incidents. This situation highlights the challenges faced by mining stakeholders in a global market defined by price volatility. Nevertheless, Ambatovy’s commitment to maintaining production despite these obstacles underscores its crucial role in Madagascar’s economy.
