Price increase exceeds 150 %
Vegetable prices on the market continue to surge dramatically.
In most cases, the increase exceeds 150 %, and this is within just a month. For example, in August, a kilo of carrots could still be purchased for 1,000 ariary (0.22 USD), b. Still, due to current economic conditions, the price has soared to 2,500 ariary (0.52 USD) per kilo. Practically speaking, the same situation applies to all vegetables, including onions, green beans, and cabbage. Currently, only leafy greens (anana) remain available at an affordable price.
This scenario will likely persist in the coming months, especially when the rainy season peaks. This will be yet another reason why transport costs fluctuate more for carriers. Notably, they will face increased repair needs, not to mention the time lost during the journey. In any case, transporters claim that the inevitable rise in transportation costs is due to the poor condition of the roads.
Their reality involves various repairs, particularly the purchase of spare parts, which are necessary yet expensive. Moreover, as long as the rains continue, the situation risks worsening, and road repairs are unlikely to happen swiftly.
