By launching a call for tenders for the management of the continent’s largest shipyard, located in Casablanca, Morocco is consolidating its position as a leading maritime operator in Africa. This strategic project aims to update and improve the national port infrastructure.
A key investment in the African maritime industry
The National Ports Agency (ANP) has issued an international call for tenders for the management of the Casablanca shipyard for a period of 30 years. This USD 300 million investment includes state-of-the-art facilities such as:
- A 244-meter repair dock
- A 9,000-ton ship lift
- A 62-meter jetty and 820 meters of berthage
- A project area that will cover 21 hectares
The intention is to capture a portion of the maritime traffic diverted from European projects, particularly following the closure of Canary Islands ports to Russian ships in 2022, thus strengthening its position as a maritime center in Africa.
The construction of this shipyard is aligned with Morocco’s strategic plan to modernize its port infrastructure and consolidate its dominant position in maritime transport between Africa and Europe.
A shipyard to contribute to the local economy
The Casablanca shipyard, the largest in Africa, will have a significant impact on the local economy in several ways.
Direct jobs: The project will require skilled labor in fields such as boilermaking, carpentry, composites, and fitting out. These trades are particularly suited to accommodating young apprentices and people who are long-term unemployed.
Indirect jobs: Related activities, such as port services, logistics, and maintenance, will generate additional opportunities in the region.
Economic diversification: By integrating shipbuilding and marine repair, the project will help diversify the local economy beyond tourism and trade.
Professional integration and training
The project could become a training center for maritime professions, in partnership with local apprenticeship and training centers. This will strengthen local skills while fostering social innovation.
In summary, this project represents a major opportunity to boost the local economy by creating jobs, developing professional skills, and positioning Casablanca as a key player in the African maritime industry.
