Morocco-USA : Peter Pham Appointed Deputy Secretary of State

Peter Pham has been appointed Deputy Secretary of State for Africa, a decision that strengthens relations between Morocco and the United States. With a degree in international relations, he has had a long career in diplomacy, notably serving as the U.S. Special Envoy for the Sahel and the Great Lakes region under the Trump administration.

Recognized as a strong advocate of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for the Sahara, Pham promotes a pragmatic solution to this conflict. Fifteen years ago, in an article published in the « Journal of the Middle East and Africa », he described the situation as « frozen » and called for a lasting resolution. For him, the integration of the Sahara into Morocco is essential for the region’s stability and development.

Peter Pham maintains close relations with Moroccan diplomats, notably Ambassador Youssef Amrani. He regularly praises Morocco’s African policy, characterized by structural investments and strengthened cooperation with several countries on the continent. The Green March holds a special place in his analysis. He describes it as « a unique example in the history of nations », highlighting the unity of the Moroccan people behind their sovereignty to end unjust colonization.

With this appointment, Peter Pham plays a decisive role in the international recognition of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan. Supported by influential figures like Senator Marco Rubio, he embodies a positive dynamic for Rabat. This appointment marks a turning point in bilateral relations, reinforcing the hope for increased recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces.
