Colonel Babacar Mbaye Appointed Director General of Senegalese Customs

Colonel Babacar Mbaye, principal customs inspector, was appointed Director General of Customs during the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. He succeeds Dr. Mbaye Ndiaye.

Born in Thiès in 1975, Babacar Mbaye holds a master’s degree in the sociology of organizations. With over 21 years of experience, he has been serving as the Director of Customs Operations (DOD) since January 2023, overseeing and coordinating customs activities nationwide.

Before this appointment, he held several key positions: auditor at the Dakar-Port-South office, division chief in Tambacounda, Kaolack, and Dakar-Port, then head of the Dakar-Port-South office. He also led the regional customs of the North and Dakar-Port. These experiences have provided him with in-depth expertise on the challenges and opportunities related to customs management in an international context.

His career is marked by honorary distinctions. Already a knight of the Order of Merit, he has received the Customs Honor Medal and the World Customs Organization Medal.

The Senegalese customs play a strategic role in mobilizing state resources, facilitating trade, and combating fraud and illicit trafficking. At the head of the institution, Babacar Mbaye will need to strengthen these missions and optimize the performance of the customs service.
