Progress for Regional Traffic in Madagascar

15 % of Mangoky Bridge construction completed

The construction of the Mangoky Bridge, funded by the Malagasy government and several Arab donors, has progressed to 15%, under the supervision of the CRCC company. The project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, aims to improve traffic on the RN9 and support agricultural development in the Atsimo-Andrefana region.

The construction of the Mangoky Bridge is a strategic project for improving access to the southwest of Madagascar. The bridge, approximately 900 meters long, addresses current traffic difficulties. « Currently, the progress of the work is estimated at 15 %. The Chinese company CRCC is using advanced techniques to ensure the solidity and durability of the structure », announced an official from the Malagasy Ministry of Public Works.

This project is funded by the Malagasy government and supported by several Arab donors, including the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the Development Solidarity Fund (FSD). It illustrates the importance of this infrastructure for regional development, both economically and socially.

This bridge provides a concrete solution to traffic problems on the RN9. The rehabilitation of this road has already enabled the connection between Toliara and the Manja district, improving traffic flow. However, crossing at Bevoay remains an obstacle, especially during the rainy season, where users sometimes have to wait over two hours to cross by ferry. Completing the Mangoky Bridge will eliminate this constraint and ensure smooth traffic flow, essential for transporting people and goods.

During a site visit on January 24, the Minister of Public Works, Rafidison Richard Théodore, confirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers in the Bas Mangoky plain. In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, solutions are being implemented to address water supply issues, particularly during drought periods. Part of the Public Works Ministry’s budget finances irrigation in Bevoay, ensuring synergy between road infrastructure and agricultural activities.

This project is not limited to mobility. It stimulates local economic growth by facilitating market access and supporting the development of agricultural activities, a vital driver for the Atsimo-Andrefana region.
