Accelerating the introduction of electric mobility
A Seychellois delegation is traveling to China to engage with various representatives from automotive factories. If successful, a memorandum of understanding will be signed.
Following the talks, the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) will receive 22 new electric and hybrid buses. According to the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation reform, the government has implemented an electric transport project. In August, with the help of the Chinese government, the General Manager of SPTC, the Principal Secretary, and others will travel to China to engage with Chinese manufacturers.
This is part of the electric mobility project launched in 2022 with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The project primarily aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by accelerating the introduction of electric mobility in Seychelles through public transport. In May 2023, international specialists from UNEP-GEF visited Seychelles for the project, which will last four years. At the start of the project, SPTC plans to integrate fully electric buses into its fleet. Currently, SPTC has 200 buses that make over 1,400 daily trips and consume approximately 220,000 liters of fuel monthly.
In April, the global memorandum of understanding on zero-emission medium and heavy-duty vehicles was signed by the Council of Ministers. This memorandum of understanding was presented at a high-level event during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai.
