Underwater volcano threatening the current Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi airport
Mayotte has initiated the construction of a new airport in response to the looming threat posed by an underwater volcano, necessitating the replacement of Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi Airport. The Minister of Transport announced that the project’s details will be revealed upon its completion.
On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Patrice Vergriete, Minister of Transport, revealed plans to unveil a new airport project for Mayotte at the beginning of the upcoming school year. This endeavor is critical for ensuring the archipelago’s long-term viability. This decision follows an inquiry led by Deputy Estelle Youssuffa, underscoring the vital role of air transportation in Mayotte’s development.
Initially, the project aimed to extend the current airport’s runway to accommodate direct flights. However, the geological risks posed by the underwater volcano have led to a change in plans. The potential threat of flooding and tsunamis poses substantial risks to existing infrastructure and the island’s inhabitants.
The establishment of a new airport on Grande-Terre presents significant economic prospects for Mayotte. According to E. Youssouffa, this new infrastructure could position the island as a crucial logistics hub in the Mozambique Channel. Mr. Vergriete emphasized the importance of adapting the project to current circumstances. Further details regarding the project’s planning will be provided later and shared with the Mahorais community.
