Madagascar’s Energy Transition : Pioneering Electric Mobility

Madagascar’s Shift Towards Eco-Friendly Transportation Solutions

The Big Island is shifting to electric vehicles to cut greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. The transition project is being rolled out gradually.

The transition to electric mobility is now underway in Madagascar, with a gradual shift towards electric transport. Financial assistance from the Global Environment Facility is enabling the Ministry of the Environment to spearhead this project.

According to the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, the initiative will be implemented over four years in Antananarivo and Toamasina, the cities with the highest pollution from combustion-powered cars. The ministries will collaborate with the private sector, especially retailers, to streamline the import of electric vehicles.

The latest finance law exempts electric and hybrid vehicles from VAT, signaling the government’s encouragement of their adoption. Although electric cars are currently more expensive than combustion-powered vehicles, the cost difference is decreasing due to long-term savings.

In major cities, 24 % of emissions come from the transport sector. This is driving the country’s shift towards cleaner, more environmentally-friendly transportation options.
