Decrease in transport fares in Madagascar

A Direct Impact of the Fuel Price Reduction

Passengers using regional and national transport in Madagascar can look forward to a significant reduction in fares, effective next week. This measure follows the recent announcement of a decrease in diesel prices by Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina.

Randriamparany Martin, president of the KMMTF Fasan’ny Karana, officially confirmed this change during a press conference at the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology on January 23, 2025. He explained that the revision resulted from consultations between transport operators and both public and private transport station managers. The aim is to adjust prices based on the current fuel cost in the market.

On a national scale, Madagascar has 103 national transport routes and 324 regional routes. Thus, the fare reduction will affect a large portion of the road network. To ensure transparency, the new fares will be displayed at all bus stations, allowing passengers to be better informed.

The reductions vary depending on the route. Travelers will enjoy a reduction of 5,000 ariary for regional routes and up to 10,000 ariary for national routes. For example: the Antananarivo-Antsirabe route will now cost 18,000 ariary, the Antananarivo-Mahajanga route will be priced at 60,000 ariary, and the Antananarivo-Sambava route will be set at 140,000 ariary. This initiative is expected to ease the financial burden on passengers using intercity transport.
