Air traffic : Rising figures in the first half of 2024

Madagascar attracts tourists

In the first half of 2024, over 495,000 passengers traveled by air, with 223,000 passengers recorded in the first quarter and an additional 272,000 in the second quarter.

This data comes from the monthly bulletins published by the Civil Aviation Authority of Madagascar (ACM) for the first six months of the year. Passenger traffic during this period was predominantly driven by the regional network, which accounted for 46 % to over 54 % of the total. The domestic network comprised about 30 %, while long-haul flights fluctuated between 15 % and 26 %, according to ACM statistics.

The number of seats offered by airlines in Madagascar also increased during this time. In the first quarter, approximately 357,000 seats were available, and by the second quarter, this figure had risen to over 394,000. Throughout the first half of the year, airlines offered more than 751,000 seats, with over half allocated to regional flights. The ACM also noted a continued rise in passenger numbers since the beginning of the summer, despite a -6 % difference in passenger traffic in June compared to 2019.

While long-haul flights experienced positive growth and regional network traffic slightly decreased, overall passenger traffic remained stable, according to the ACM. A recent study by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts revealed that 98,162 international tourists visited Madagascar during the first half of 2024. In July 2024 alone, an additional 28,260 tourists were recorded.
