A global ambition driven by the state and the private sector
With strategic projects underway, the Big Island wants to transform its tourism sector into an engine of sustainable development and economic growth.
At the World Government Summit in Dubai, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina presented Madagascar’s ambition to become a global tourism destination of reference. « Madagascar has the means and ambition to succeed », he said. The government is pursuing strategic projects to transform the sector. Among these, the creation of integrated tourism zones and high-end ecological resorts in nature reserves are among the key initiatives. The aim is to promote Madagascar’s biodiversity, culture and handicrafts. « The groundwork for this transformation has already been laid », the President said.
Moreover, cooperation with the private sector is essential to ensure the success of this initiative. Several international groups, in the hotel and air transport sectors, have already expressed their interest. At the same time, a regulatory framework favorable to investment has been established. As a result, administrative formalities have been simplified and tax incentives introduced to encourage the construction of hotels and the development of tourist services.
Madagascar’s attractiveness as a tourist destination is also underpinned by a growing dynamic of air transport. In 2024, the country registered more than 1.2 million travelers, an increase of nearly 10% over the previous year, according to Madagascar Civil Aviation (ACM).
La Grande île draws on international best practices to ensure hospitality and quality services. The country aims to attract one million tourists by 2028. This project is already supported by the arrival of many international airlines such as Airlink, Air Austral, Air France, Corsair, Turkish Airlines and Emirates, facilitating access to the country.
