Chameleon Festival: a new boost for Malagasy biodiversity

First Chameleon Festival in South Amboasary

On June 13, 14 and 15, 2025, the first edition of the Festival du Caméléon will be held in Amboasary-Sud. A unique event that aims to raise awareness of the protection of this endemic species, while valuing the local cultural richness.

Madagascar is home to the largest chameleon diversity in the world. Of the 234 species listed, 89 are endemic to the island, according to Dr. Andriantsimanarilafy Rodlis Raphali, coordinator of the Madagasikara Voakajy research program. Yet more than 50% of them are at risk.

Faced with this alarming situation, the Festival du Caméléon intends to promote the preservation of this emblematic species. For three days, Amboasary-Sud will be able to enjoy a variety of activities: exhibitions, carnival, conferences and artistic performances. Atandroy culture will be celebrated through dance, music and traditional presentations.

Beyond festivity, this event will serve as a platform for exchanges between experts, residents and tourism stakeholders. The aim is to increase local and international awareness of the importance of these unique reptiles and to promote concrete actions for their protection, particularly in the Anosy and Androy regions.

The festival will also help boost ecotourism in this region of southern Madagascar, particularly around Lake Anony, an exceptional natural site. This initiative is part of a broader effort to conserve biodiversity, similar to efforts being made for other iconic species in Madagascar, such as endemic turtles.
