Strengthening Madagascar’s digital transition

During his visit to China, the President of Madagascar oversaw the signing of a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malagasy government and Huawei Technologies. This agreement marks a significant step in advancing Madagascar’s digital infrastructure and fostering closer collaboration in the technology sector.

MoU signed between Madagascar’s Ministry of Economy and Finance and Huawei, aims to accelerate the country’s digital transformation by enhancing information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. The agreement underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing key sectors such as e-government, education, and digital energy, which are crucial for Madagascar’s long-term vision of sustainable, inclusive, and tech-driven development.

A key element of this partnership focuses on exploring Huawei’s Microgrid Solar solutions to improve Madagascar’s energy access, particularly in rural areas. The push for universal electrical coverage is seen as essential for supporting digital and smart applications, which require reliable energy sources.

Strengthening the national fiber optic network and exploring the possibility of creating a national cloud are also priorities under the MoU. These initiatives aim to build a solid foundation for the growth of a digital economy in Madagascar. Both parties also discussed the importance of expanding digital inclusion, particularly by enhancing connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

Huawei’s « Digital Rural + » initiative, which seeks to extend network coverage to rural areas and introduce smart applications like online education, was presented as a promising solution to achieve these goals. By improving digital access and infrastructure, the collaboration between Madagascar and Huawei is poised to play a crucial role in advancing the country’s digital transformation and bridging the digital divide.
