Training Marine Biologists in Coral Reef Restoration

Nature Seychelles and WWF Madagascar join forces

The non-profit organization Nature Seychelles has partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Madagascar. This collaboration offers a 15-day scientific training on coral reef restoration.

According to Nature Seychelles, the training covers the fundamental principles of restoration ecology, best practices, proper design, logistics, and planning. This segment combines classroom lectures and field activities organized by Nature Seychelles’ Reef Rescuers, under the guidance of Dr. Luca Saponari.

All aspects of coral reef restoration are taught to participants through the Reef Rescuers program, which has been in place for 14 years. The organizers aim to develop skills in collecting healthy corals for restoration, constructing underwater nurseries, cultivating corals underwater, planting in degraded areas, and monitoring and evaluating the participants. The training is based on the Coral Reef Restoration Guide by Nature Seychelles. It will take place alongside the new practices of the third phase of the program, funded by the Adaptation Fund through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Seychelles government.
