New economic model for waste recovery

Toamasina Prepares to Host a Waste Sorting and Recovery Center

On April 1, 2025, Madagascar will open the East Africa sub-regional workshop on waste management and the circular economy.

This workshop brings together United Nations representatives, Malagasy ministers, and diplomats, including the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, to discuss concrete solutions.

In his speech, the United Nations Representative in Madagascar emphasized international cooperation as key to the transition to more sustainable practices. “We are proud to support countries like Madagascar in their sustainable development efforts“, he said, adding that the lack of reliable data hinders the development of effective public policies. This workshop aims to fill these information gaps.

The Minister of the Environment, Max Fontaine, details the projects underway to transform waste into resources. The Minister discussed the upcoming inauguration of a sorting and recovery center in Toamasina, as well as other initiatives aimed at encouraging private investment in the sector. “Waste is no longer a burden, but a real economic opportunity“, he stated.

For her part, the Minister of Regional Planning, Naina Andriatsitohaina, discussed the challenges associated with waste collection at the local level. According to him, the success of this initiative requires the strong involvement of local authorities, businesses, and citizens.
