Strengthening and supporting the improvement of Seychellois communities
The first national diaspora policy for the island nation for 2024-2029 was launched on Tuesday by Seychelles and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The event marks a crucial step in involving Seychelles, particularly its diaspora worldwide. President Wavel Ramkalawan, the representative of the IOM Regional Director’s office for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and Southern Africa, Justin MacDermott, along with other officials and members of the diplomatic corps, attended the ceremony.
The policy was developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Seychelles and approved in September 2023. It aims to strengthen and support improving Seychellois communities nationally and in host countries. This initiative is divided into four main parts, each addressing essential aspects of diaspora involvement.
In his speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism highlighted the unity and collective strength of the Seychellois people. He emphasized that Seychellois residents abroad play an essential role in national growth. Spread across the world, they bring with them various forms of capital – cultural, economic, human, and social. The Minister stated that they are not just contributors but an integral part of the national fabric.
