KFC Mauritius and WeCycle: a winning partnership for the environment
Waste management is a major challenge in Mauritius, due to the saturation of the Mare Chicose landfill.
Faced with this environmental emergency, KFC Mauritius has decided to take action by setting up a recycling program for its cardboard packaging. Since August 2024, the fast food chain has been working with WeCycle, a company of the Eclosia group specializing in recycling, to collect and process its uncontaminated cardboard. « Every little gesture counts. Our cardboard packaging, like the boxes we receive from our suppliers, are collected in special bins before being recycled by WeCycle », explains Annabelle Fanchette, Marketing and Communications Manager at KFC Mauritius.
The initiative was first tested in the Goodlands restaurant before being extended to the Flacq Centre, Vacoas, Curepipe and Rose-Hill establishments. The results are already visible: between September and December 2024, 2.7 tonnes of cardboard were recycled. An encouraging figure that is pushing the brand to expand its program to all of its restaurants in 2025.
Implementing such a recycling system was not without its difficulties. Storing the bins, organizing collections and raising staff awareness required adjustments. « Our restaurant managers played a key role in training their teams, particularly through the Climate Fresco. We also provide monthly monitoring to optimize the process », explains Annabelle Fanchette. With this program, the company confirms its environmental commitment, continuing its efforts after eliminating plastic straws in 2020.
