Highlighting the scientific data obtained
The total area of precious trees such as rosewood and ebony amounts to 25,000 hectares in Alaotra Mangoro and Analanjirofo.
The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (Medd) recently conducted an inventory of these lands managed by community-based organizations (VOI), in collaboration with the NGO « Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) Madagascar » and the University of Antananarivo.
The « Sustainable Management of Precious Woods Dalbergia and Diospyros (G3D) » project is part of this initiative.
The implementation of the action plan of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) benefits from scientific support. The inventory is expected to be completed by the end of December, and the results will be submitted to CITES, reports the Medd.
The second phase of the G3D project, which began in November 2023, poses the challenge of highlighting the scientific data obtained. During the first phase, the focus was on identifying species present in Madagascar, establishing identification methods from logs, and preserving the genetic resources of these species in the long term.
