Advancing clarity in fisheries management
Moving from its current status of « significant progress » to « full compliance » under the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) is a key milestone for Seychelles. Following the successful completion of its second validation process, the nation is strengthening its sustainable fisheries management.
In a joint press release, FiTI and the Department of the Blue Economy announced that the second approval took place with Stefaan Depypere, an independent validator, during his visit to Seychelles from October 21 to 26. During this stay, Depypere held in-depth discussions with stakeholders across various sectors.
He reviewed the initial analysis carried out by the FiTI International Secretariat, led by Seychellois Yannick Memee, and identified both the progress made and opportunities for optimizing FiTI’s national implementation. Depypere met with stakeholders, including Fisheries Minister Jean-François Ferrari, principal secretaries from the Blue Economy and Fisheries departments, and civil society representatives, among others. This collaborative approach ensures that the feedback gathered reflects the diverse perspectives needed for effective marine resource management in Seychelles.
This process enables an objective assessment of past outcomes, underscoring the initiative’s commitment to supporting Seychelles in enhancing transparency and accountability in fisheries management.
