Promoting sustainable agriculture
Since the launch of the agricultural financing and inclusive value chain support program, the aim has been to support farmers and boost productivity.
After several years of implementation in various parts of the island, the first results of the Afafi program are emerging. Among the regions affected by climate change and seasonal desertification are Androy, the Anosy region, and Atsimo Atsinanana. According to program officials, initiatives have been undertaken to promote sustainable agriculture across the territory.
Ten hydro-agricultural perimeters have been developed since the start of the program in the southern region, including the construction of a dam. This has led to better water resource management for agriculture. These actions are closely connected, as the dam increases the irrigation capacity of these agricultural areas. The rehabilitation of several agricultural zones has also helped strengthen productivity in the affected regions. The consolidation of value chain foundations has brought additional positive outcomes in these areas.
The Afafi South program has delivered tangible results, notably improving the living conditions of rural populations in Anosy, Androy, and Atsimo Atsinanana. According to the European Union, Afafi has expressed its desire to contribute to the reconstruction and economic recovery of the island. This commitment is reflected in the allocation of a substantial sum: EUR 492 million through the European Development Fund (EDF).
