Tackling climate challenges
For a project proposal submitted to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Seychelles has been awarded funding of 2.76 million USD to advance its National Adaptation Planning (NAP) mechanism.
This landmark project, approved on October 10 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change, and Environment (MACCE), will be implemented over the next three years. The government aims to strengthen the island’s ability to tackle the growing challenges posed by climate change. The project’s goal is to address key barriers to effective adaptation planning, developed with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in partnership with the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub (CCFAH).
These challenges include a lack of institutional capacity, poor cooperation, and inadequate funding mechanisms. Building on progress achieved through national strategies like the Seychelles National Climate Change Policy, this project will ensure the country is prepared for a sustainable, climate-resilient future. Flavien Joubert, Minister of Agriculture, Environment, and Climate Change, emphasized that while Seychelles can access climate change funding, there remains one more step to overcome.
As a small island developing state, Seychelles faces specific challenges linked to global warming. Rising sea levels, changing weather patterns, and extreme weather conditions directly impact crucial sectors such as tourism, fishing, and agriculture. This project will ensure a comprehensive approach to adaptation planning, benefiting both government entities and communities at every level.
