Economic Growth – Environmental Preservation : Finding the Balance

Advocacy for the adoption of more sustainable methods

Calling for swift action, Joanna Bérenger, Minister of Environment, emphasizes balancing economic growth and environmental preservation in Mauritius.

During an award ceremony held in Port-Louis on January 22, 2025, Joanna Bérenger advocated for more sustainable waste management methods. This event marked the conclusion of a three-day workshop focused on environmental financing solutions. It was organized with the Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) and the French Development Agency (AFD). This initiative is part of the FEXTE (Fund for Technical Expertise and Experience Sharing) Convention.

Frédéric Bontems, French Ambassador, and Frédéric Guillot, ADEME Director, attended the ceremony. In her speech, the Minister highlighted the urgency of adopting sustainable solutions to ecological challenges. She called for enhanced cooperation and knowledge sharing to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

This training aims to equip the ministry and stakeholders with the necessary tools to implement effective measures for sustainable development. Joanna Bérenger reaffirmed her commitment to encouraging collaborative work to ensure the application of viable solutions to the country’s environmental challenges.

Ambassador Bontems reiterated France’s constant support for Mauritius in the fight against pollution and waste management. He highlighted the FEXTE agreement, concluded in 2023, which provides financial support for environmental projects. He emphasized the importance of a circular economy strategy to improve waste management and strengthen sustainable development initiatives in Mauritius.
