Bootcamp and Pitch Competition : Black Pearl from the University of Mauritius wins award

Encouraging young people to showcase their innovative ideas

The Bootcamp and Pitch Competition recognized a Mauritian university during the awards ceremony on Thursday, June 13, at Les Docks in Port-Louis. The Blue Economy Hybrid System project by the Black Pearl group from the University of Mauritius won the competition.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Utilities and the United Nations Environment Programme, aimed to encourage young people to showcase innovative ideas for making Mauritius a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable island. The focus of the Bootcamp and Pitch Competition was on youth, featuring ten groups of five people aged 18 to 25. Participants were required to be enrolled in higher education, vocational, or training establishments and could come from any field of study.

According to Minister Joe Lesjongard, Mauritius is a significant ocean economy despite its small size, with an exclusive economic zone of 2.3 million square kilometers offering numerous opportunities. The country seeks international support through strong diplomatic relations to foster sustainable ocean economies. Opportunities abound in various fields, including ecological fishing, aquaculture, marine and coastal tourism, and Oceanian renewable energies.
