Agreement to preserve an Indigenous forest in Le Morne

Enhancing the landscape of the Heritage Lite

Absa Mauritius is spearheading a reforestation project on a UNESCO World Heritage site in Le Morne, where 12,000 trees will be planted across 15 hectares of indigenous forest.

The initiative aims to combat the effects of climate change and preserve the biological diversity of this crucial forest. This project is part of Absa Mauritius’ Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy. The bank and the Minister of Agro-industry and Food Security have formalized their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed during an official ceremony.

To date, 2,200 plants have been successfully planted. The Le Morne region, renowned for its historical and cultural significance, also plays a vital ecological role. The forest there is home to rare endemic plant species. Mahen Seeruttun, the Minister of Agro-industry and Food Security expressed his appreciation for the initiative during the MoU signing. The project aims to enhance the heritage site’s landscape by reintroducing indigenous plant species in collaboration with various stakeholders.
