President expresses satisfaction
In the 2024 Mo Ibrahim Report on African Governance, President Wavel Ramkalawan expressed satisfaction with Seychelles being ranked at the top of the continent.
« We have received positive news; Seychelles ranks first in Africa on the Index, which holds great significance as the country is recognized as a major authority in Africa », said the President. This year’s report covers data over 10 years, from 2014 to 2023, spanning the leadership of three presidents James Michel, Danny Faure, and the current president, Wavel Ramkalawan. In the Global Governance category, Seychelles took the top spot with 75.3 out of 100 potential points. At the same time, Mauritius ranked second with 72.8 out of 100. Somalia and South Sudan are at the bottom of the ranking.
The Seychelles, a group of 115 islands in the Western Indian Ocean, also ranked among the top 10 countries that made significant progress between 2014 and 2023, along with The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Angola, Mauritania, and Djibouti. Ramkalawan emphasized that while this is a source of great pride, there is still room for improvement.
The Mo Ibrahim Index is the most comprehensive measure of governance performance across 54 African nations. It covers a wide range of governance aspects, including the environment and equality, with enhanced indicators and a dedicated section focused on the voices of African citizens.
