Reducing pressures on Biodiversity
Madagascar places great importance on the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources. Thus, the second phase of the BIODEV 2030 project was launched on July 4, 2024.
This is a joint project by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MPEB), and WWF, with support from the French Development Agency (AFD). In this second phase, the shrimp sector is particularly highlighted. It is a key element of Madagascar’s economy and an essential livelihood for coastal communities.
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022 emphasized the importance of biological diversity. During the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), participants highlighted their initiative. The goal of this framework is to halt and reverse the decline in biodiversity by 2030. The project underscores the importance of economic development based on natural resources.
The preservation of marine biological diversity is a major challenge for the country. Through this project, it will be possible to reconcile sustainable economic development with nature conservation. During the initial phase of the project, pilot countries, including Madagascar, signed commitments to reduce pressures on biodiversity.
