Urgency to rehabilitate national roads

Some works currently underway

Richard Théodore Rafidison, the new Minister of Public Works, announced that emergency repairs will be carried out on the national roads RN2, RN4, and RN7.

The majority of national roads are currently in poor condition, necessitating swift action to address the issues in the road infrastructure, particularly on the RN2, RN4, and RN7. These remarks were made by the incoming Minister after the handover ceremony between him and the outgoing Minister, Jerry Hatrefindrazana.

RN2 (Antananarivo-Toamasina), RN4 (Antananarivo-Mahajanga), and RN7 (Antananarivo-Toliara) are of particular concern. These routes, which connect the capital to the former provinces, play a crucial role in the functioning of the national economy, making their restoration a matter of urgency. The head of the Ministry of Public Works announced that the renovation works are already funded by external resources and financing from the World Bank. Some of the work has already begun and is currently underway.

Since 2020, road infrastructure has deteriorated, particularly due to the disregard of weight regulations, theft of buses, and heavy rainfall. This has had significant impacts on the users of national roads. Several sections of the national roads are in poor condition. Currently, it takes around 12 hours, or even more, to travel from the capital to Toamasina. It is also important not to overlook the northern and southern sections of the RN4. The goal is to make these roads accessible to all users.
