Supporting Seychelles’ development priorities
By signing agreements, China and Seychelles strengthen their strategic collaboration. Major social housing projects are planned on the main island of Mahé, aiming to consolidate the ties between the two countries.
The agreements were concluded on December 13 at Maison Queau de Quinssy, the headquarters of the Seychelles Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These partnerships were signed on behalf of their respective governments by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde, and the Chinese Ambassador to Seychelles, Lin Nan. In the districts of Anse Royale and Anse Boileau, the project plans to build 136 social housing units, funded by a Chinese grant, with construction expected to begin in March 2026.
The decision stems from negotiations during Seychelles’ participation in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing this September, attended by Seychellois President Ramkalawan, who announced the social housing funding upon his return.
FOCAC, founded in 2000, is a platform for collaboration between China and 53 African countries. Ambassador Lin Nan highlighted China’s commitment to supporting Seychelles’ development priorities during the signing ceremony. The most crucial preliminary step for the project’s realization is the signing of the letter of commitment, in accordance with China’s foreign aid policy. In addition to infrastructure, China plays a significant role in the health sector in Seychelles.
