Strengthening road connectivity
World Bank representatives are currently in Madagascar to assess three major road projects financed by the institution, marking an annual estimate of Bretton Woods regional investments.
The World Bank will closely review three significant road projects, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in investment, over the next two weeks. These mission teams are in Madagascar to monitor the progress and implementation of works on several national roads. These projects include, among others, the construction, renovation, or paving of national roads RN10, RN7, RN4, RNT12 A, and numerous bridges, according to the Ministry of Public Works.
Several of these road projects reflect significant investments from the Bretton Woods institution. Notably, projects such as the Road Sector Sustainability Project, « Connecting Madagascar for Inclusive Growth », and the Transport Connectivity Support Program are key components. This week, the representatives will hold multiple meetings with local officials and begin evaluating the three major projects they’ve funded. The following week will be dedicated to on-site assessments.
This mission provides the Ministry of Public Works with the opportunity to closely observe the progress of the works, manage funding, and explore partnership opportunities. According to sources, these monitoring missions are conducted regularly, at intervals of six months to a year. The World Bank is a significant financial backer of road infrastructure in Madagascar. In 2022, the institution allocated 400 million USD to enhance road connectivity. The Connecting Madagascar for Inclusive Growth project alone received 200 million USD in funding and a 200 million USD grant, aimed at improving rural communities’ access to social and economic opportunities.
