New Commitment to Face Climate Challenges
Huguette Bello, President of the Réunion Island Region, signed a strategic commitment with construction industry stakeholders on February 11, 2025.
This agreement aims to invigorate the building sector in response to climate and economic challenges. « Rethinking our construction methods in the face of climate change has become imperative », declared the president. Tropical architecture is essential for energy resilience and sustainability.
The objective is to structure the sector, encourage innovation, and strengthen the competitiveness of local companies. Born from consultation with economic actors, this commitment secures the supply of materials and supports energy renovation.
Valuing local expertise is a priority. Huguette Bello also mentioned the importance of working with neighboring countries, a point to be addressed during the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) summit in April.
Cyrille Rickmounie, President of the Confederation of Artisans and Small Construction Enterprises (Capeb), insists on solidarity and pooling of resources to meet growing demand. Meanwhile, Adrien Boisedu, Director of Opco Constructys, emphasizes that a coordinated approach is indispensable to guarantee the success of projects.
Stéphane Brossard, President of the Technical Commission of the Federation of Building and Public Works Boards (FRBTP), advocates adapting standards to local specificities. While the Thermal, Acoustic, and Ventilation Regulations of Réunion Island (RTADOM) is a first step, a compliance center for local products is also necessary to improve standards.
