Port of Toamasina : Filling of the New Container Terminal

Works are currently 47 % complete

The C4 container terminal at the port of Toamasina, covering an area of 6.46 ha, is currently in the filling phase. According to the quarterly report on the activity of the port of Toamasina, the works are currently 47 % complete and their completion is expected by May 2027.

Every day, 3,000 tons of sand, 500 tons of stones, and 30 tons of cement are transported by land to the project site, while imported materials such as steel are transported by sea. According to the information obtained, the C4 terminal is not just an extension of the current port. The storage capacity is planned to accommodate up to 6,156 twenty-foot equivalents (TEUs), of which 720 TEUs are dedicated to refrigerated containers.

The container storage blocks, intended to be used with RTG cranes, are arranged similarly to the existing C3 container yard. Routes are laid out for both internal and external trucks, thus ensuring optimal circulation.

The major port in the East is set to transform into an important port hub in the Indian Ocean. However, as is often the case in major projects, the construction of this C4 terminal is facing various unforeseen events. Notably, abnormal movements of the piles, as well as a multitude of constant obstacles. Nevertheless, the involvement of the on-site teams and the implementation of innovative solutions contribute to overcoming the various obstacles.
