Laying the Foundation Stone for the Helendje-Maweni Road

Facilitating the transport of goods to markets

As part of the Afidev project, Daniel Ali Bandar, Minister of Agriculture, has initiated the restoration of rural roads connecting Maweni to Helendje ya Mbude.

This 3-kilometer stretch, with an estimated cost exceeding 1 million USD, is expected to be completed within six months. During a ceremony held in Maweni, the Comorian government, in collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD), officially launched the road construction. The event was attended by several notable figures, including the President’s current political advisor, the Director-General of Roads, the regional prefect, and local mayors.

In her speech, Charmila Mohamed, coordinator of the Afidev project, emphasized the significance of this initiative for local farmers. « The steps we are taking today will simplify the lives of farmers and boost agricultural production. Today, we lay the foundation stone, and we hope to gather here again in six months for the inauguration », she said. She noted that the project primarily aims to promote vegetable production. The road, as an essential infrastructure for connectivity, will not only facilitate the movement of farmers but also ensure smoother transportation of their goods to markets.

The Minister highlighted the numerous benefits of this infrastructure: « It will enable young farmers to access innovative technologies, such as tractors, and ease the transport of agricultural products to markets ». Meanwhile, Bacar Mvoulana, Minister of National Education, underscored the project’s social impact.
