Preserving the environment while promoting tourism
In the context of implementing the Land Use Plan (Sat), the creation of the Mohéli Land Use Council (Camt) has taken place. This was done under the direction of the island’s governor and the Ministry of Land Use, Urban Planning, responsible for Land Affairs and Land Transport.
This body is part of the Ulanga Mali project, supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), to support the island’s development and evaluate its development initiatives. The workshop for the establishment of the Catm, held at the Faradel Hotel in Fomboni, saw the participation of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Land Use, along with other national and island representatives.
This project carried out thanks to the Mohéli National Park (Pnm) in collaboration with the European Union and the AFD, aims to preserve the environment while promoting tourism through prudent land management. The Catm is an advisory committee tasked with overseeing the application of the Land Use Plan and providing its opinion on development initiatives in Mwali.
This body brings together various local actors, including municipal elected officials, representatives of the private sector, civil society, and institutions working for environmental protection. It is assisted by a permanent technical secretariat whose mission is to promote the Sat to donors and coordinate interventions on the ground.
Chamisa Ben Mohamed, the governor of Mwali, highlights the strategic importance of the Sat for the island. « The SAT aims, among other things, to strengthen road and air connectivity by modernizing existing infrastructure ». Infrastructure projects include the development of the road between Fomboni and Wanani, the construction of rural tracks, and the creation of markets in Wanani and Niumashuwa, as well as the reconstruction of the Fomboni market.
