Railway Line Renovation and Agricultural Cooperation
French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Madagascar is marked by important announcements aimed at supporting the country’s development.
On April 23, 2025, during his speech at the Iavoloha State Palace, Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Madagascar through strategic projects, with the support of France.
Among the flagship initiatives, the modernization of the railway lines connecting Antananarivo to Toamasina and Fianarantsoa to Manakara was highlighted. These infrastructures, inherited from French colonization, are essential for the country’s economic development. President Rajoelina emphasized the importance of French assistance for their renovation. His counterpart confirmed France’s technical and financial support, including rolling stock and expertise.
In the agricultural sector, where 80% of the population lives in rural areas, Madagascar aspires to food self-sufficiency. The Malagasy President emphasized the need for strengthened cooperation with France. Macron also emphasized the importance of regional projects through the Indian Ocean Commission to improve food security.
Education was also discussed, with the Malagasy Head of State’s proposal to create a leading university in Madagascar. Macron expressed his support for this initiative and reaffirmed France’s commitment to higher education.
