Madagascar : Opening of the sale of gold coins to tourists

Soon an infrastructure in Madagascar capable of manufacturing these coins

Soon, visitors will have the opportunity to acquire a gold coin during their trip to Madagascar. Presented by Head of State Andry Rajoelina, this commemorative 50 MGA coin is issued by Banky Foiben’i Madagasikara.

Foreign tourists will soon be able to obtain a gold coin during their visit to Madagascar. This 50 MGA coin, unveiled during President Andry Rajoelina’s year-end speech, will be locally produced thanks to a gold refinery whose inauguration will coincide with the 65th anniversary of independence.

Initially, access to these coins was restricted to Madagascar citizens, upon presentation of a national identity card. To obtain one, they had to register on the online platform of Banky Foiben’i Madagasikara (BFM).

Currently, the gold coins offered by BFM are sourced from Turkey. By the end of 2024, President Andry Rajoelina had promised to establish an infrastructure in Madagascar capable of manufacturing these coins. In his latest speech, he announced that this gold refinery should be operational this year, 2025.
