Floods in Antananarivo: authorities step up emergency response
Faced with heavy rains and flooding in Antananarivo and its surroundings, Madagascar is strengthening its weather management systems.
The government is announcing the creation of a National Coordination Center (NCC) to optimize emergency response. This new body, included in the contingency plan of the nine sectoral groups, aims to improve the responsiveness and cooperation between the different actors involved.
Communication is a priority in managing this situation. Communications Minister Mara Volamiranty Donna stresses the need for rigorous and accessible information. « The media plays a key role. In addition, it is imperative to disseminate verified and balanced information to avoid panic and misinformation », she said. The Malagasy national radio (RNM) and several private channels are providing enhanced coverage of the situation.
General Elack Olivier, Director of the National Bureau for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), said the CNC does not replace existing structures, but strengthens them by ensuring better coordination. A meeting chaired by the Minister of the Interior brings together the main actors. This includes the fire brigade, the armed forces, the Red Cross and municipalities, to take stock of ongoing operations.
At the same time, the Minister of Population recalls the importance of rapid and adequate aid for the victims. « Solidarity and responsiveness must be our top priorities », she said. With this new structure, Madagascar intends to strengthen its response to the intensification of natural disasters, a key challenge in the context of climate change.
