A relief for economic operators
The Malagasy authorities have lifted the ban on ships from the Comoros. This measure is being introduced in October 2024 due to the resurgence of cholera cases in the archipelago.
The decision now allows Comorian boats to resume maritime routes to Madagascar, after several months of suspension. The Malagasy authorities specified that the lifting of the ban follows an improvement in the health situation in the Comoros. An official press release indicates that this decision was taken after consultation with health stakeholders. Strict health measures remain in place, such as the disinfection of goods, hand washing and reinforced border controls. Preventive treatments will also be administered to travelers.
The Comorian authorities welcome this measure and express their satisfaction at seeing Madagascar agree to reopen traffic. Thus, they reaffirm their willingness to collaborate to restore air links, a long-standing request between the two countries.
The resumption of maritime traffic comes at a strategic moment, a few weeks before the Indian Ocean Commission summit, scheduled for April 24 in Nosy-Be. This decision is also well received by traders from both countries, who had expressed their discontent. In particular during a sit-in organized in Mahajanga in February to protest against the prolonged closure of ports.
