The Mauritian government focuses on Africa and strategic sectors
At the 176th Annual General Meeting of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Minister of Foreign Affairs Dhananjay Ramful presented Mauritius’ plans to improve its trade relations and diversify its exports.
Dhananjay Ramful explained the importance of strengthening ties with key markets in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, while emphasizing trade agreements with countries such as India, China, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Minister also spoke about the African Continental Free Trade Area, which offers a significant opportunity for Mauritius. “Africa is one of the fastest-growing consumer markets in the world, with a potential market of 1.7 billion people and projected economic spending of 2.3 trillion USD by 2030“, he added.
However, he also mentioned challenges. The country’s trade deficit has increased from 14.05 billion rupees (309.1 million USD) in 2000 to 179.98 billion rupees in 2023. This is due to growing dependence on imports and fluctuations in global markets. The ministry is currently conducting an audit of trade agreements to find solutions.
The Mauritian government is also focusing on two key sectors: the maritime economy and renewable energy. These areas are essential to supporting the country’s economic development and improving its global competitiveness.
