Cyclone Forecasts : Anacm Calls for Vigilance After Chido

Risk of 2 cyclones forming in the Comoros

Following the passage of Cyclone Chido, Anacm warns of increased cyclone risks until May 2025. Technicians emphasize the importance of preparing for the consequences of climate change.

Just 24 hours after Cyclone Chido passed, Abdou Mondoha Abdillah, the Director-General of Anacm, issued a call for caution. According to him, the cyclone season, which lasts until May 2025, requires constant vigilance.

Forecasts for the 2024-2025 cyclone season in the southwest Indian Ocean were presented by forecaster Abdou-Oikil Said Ridhoine. He stated that cyclone formation regions are expected to be concentrated in the eastern part of the basin. The projected trajectories may primarily head west or southwest, increasing the risk for inhabited lands in the region.

According to Abdou-Oikil Said, there is a risk of 0 to 2 cyclones forming in the Comoros. He explained that this could result in up to two cyclonic events this season. The Acting Technical Director of Meteorology, Abdoulwahab Mohamed Toihir, however, emphasized that these forecasts are still hypotheses. The opportunity was used by technicians to explain the consequences of climate change on rainfall and heat. This year, they anticipate a decrease in rainfall, offset by periods of heavy surges likely to cause river overflows and material damage.
